MSCW to organise ‘Power Walk’ on March 2

SHILLONG: In the wake of rising cases of violence against women and in order to campaign and promote their safety, the Meghalaya State Commission for Women (MSCW) has appealed to all Seng Kynthei in and around the city, the Seng Samla Shnong, women’s organisations, NGOs and likeminded individuals to lend a hand in raising awareness about equal rights for women to claim her spaces everywhere and anywhere.
In this regard, the MSCW in collaboration with Martin Luther Christian University and Women’s College and with the support of the National Commission for Women (NCW), New Delhi, will organise a ‘Power Walk’ on March 2 from 6 pm. It will start from Khyndailad and culminate at State Central Library here.
The programme is part of the national event that is being organised in other cities across the nation on March 1.
In the New Delhi scenario, the NCW will also be organising the ‘Power Walk’ in the national capital on March 1 in which rape and acid attack survivors will take part to raise awareness about violence against women and their safety.
Earlier, the chairperson of NCW, Rekha Sharma said that the ‘Power Walk’ is a drive to instill, with a belief that the only way to make public spaces safe is to occupy in large numbers and put out the message clearly that whether day or night, women have equal right to claim her spaces.
“We must break norms on defining respectability for women like, ‘safe and unsafe’, ‘good enough reason or not’ for her to get out of the house – such perception of a woman in public spaces must change,” Sharma had said.
Talking on the issue of women safety, the NCW chairperson had said that there is a need to change the mindset of the people.
“Yes, the police are working but after the crime has occurred. The crime should not take place in the first place and for that, the mindset of the people needs to change and the walk is an attempt towards that,” she added.
