SHILLONG: In view of the prevailing law and order situation, the eminent citizens from different religion and communities have resolved to bring back peace and tranquillity in Meghalaya.

Citizens from different communities met here in the city during a peace meet organised by the Deputy Commissioner’s office in which the Home Minister, Lahkmen Rymbu as well as East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner, M War Nongbri participated.

The peace meeting deliberated on the need to maintain peace and harmony among different communities belonging to different faith and religion. The meeting stressed on looking beyond religious background and the roles of Dorbar Shnongs in bridging gaps between different communities and building trust amongst citizens.

Speaking to media persons after the meeting, Home Minister, Lahkmen Rymbui said that the Government in the meeting enlightened the citizens about the steps taken by the Government to contain the situation and how the citizens can help the Government.

“ The Rangbah Shnongs and other stakeholders are unanimous that by any means peace and tranquillity should return to Meghalaya at the earliest,” the Home Minister said.

During the meeting, the citizens also maintained that law should deal firmly with anybody and  it should not be biased to anybody  even as the meeting felt that  this kind of engagements between communities and the Government must continue from time to time

According to Rymbui, the citizens are in support of the Government’s resolution for implementing ILP in the state even as they want the Government to come out with an alternative mechanism for being responsive to the  problems of the citizens.

Encouraged with the outcome of the meeting, the Government  now is contemplating to form committees in different districts which would act as the facilitator of  peace and tranquillity.

The Home Minister also assured that the Government would take all measures to protect the lives and property of the people.
