NONGSTOIN: With the shortage of essential commodities in the open market due to the curfew to prevent COVID-19 in Mawshynrut, West Khasi Hills district, the local MLA Gigur Myrthong donated 2400 sacks of rice to 348 villages in the Constituency.
The distribution started on Wednesday. It will be distributed only to poor family who do not have ration cards. The contribution made by the MLA is the highest donation so far in the state till date.
Myrthong said, “Most of the families have financial problem in the constituency and they have requested him to distribute rice as they have no money. So as an MLA/MDC he is sacrificing his salary and also requested business traders in Shallang to distribute for the cause”.
“I have instructed the headmen and party men to select all the names who have no ration cards and from a poor family background and for those who have submitted the list I have sent the trucks load with rice to be distributed in their doorstep” Myrthong added.
Social distancing followed
To maintain social distancing, Myrthong has decided to arrange trucks to reach the doorstep of every household. He said for now 2400 packets will be distributed but if the situation gets worst in the future he will hand out it again.
He said that from his salary he has donated 800 packets, from the local Directors of Coke plan 1500 sacks and petrol pump owners contributed 100 sacks of rice.
