JOWAI: The Meghalaya People’s Labour Union (MPLU) has lauded the government for managing the COVID-19 pandemic as the state has no positive case so far.
In a letter to Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, the union thanked the government for addressing the issues people are facing. “The chief minister promptly ensured the notification which opened the toll free number 1070 for the general public,” the union president Erwin K Syiem Sutnga said in the letter.
However, while putting forward few suggestions, Syiem said that more toll free numbers are needed since 1070 number is constantly engaged.
He further said that the distress among miners has to be addressed.
The district Mineral Fund may be used to ease their financial problems.
“There is a need to streamline and simplify system of financial assistance in these challenging times and a failing economy due to the COVID-19 pandemic.”
“Less bureaucratic influence and people oriented approaches have to be adopted,” he said.
While informing that he had received complaints that the Muster Roll workers of Horticulture Department have not yet received payments, Syiem asked the chief minister to immediately release their salaries.
The union leader also suggested that the limit of Meghalaya Health Insurance Scheme (MHIS) should be increased to simplify the payment methods by removing the cash burden of the insured.
“Medical coverage under MHIS should be expanded and the cash cover be increased.”
