JOWAI: The Lukha river in East Jaintia Hills has changed its colour from blue to normal amid lockdown raising notion in the minds of locals that the closure of cement plants around the area has given way for the phenomenon.
Locals and KSU Sunapyrdi Unit maintained that the reason for the change of colour in the river is the closure of the cement plants during ongoing lockdown.
“The river has changed its colour back to normal again and all kind of fish have started to come back into the river from various sources,” the KSU said.
KSU Narpuh Circle president K Suchiang said that the cement plants cannot deny that their activities have caused the river to change its colour giving it a bad look and the government should do something about it.
“Before the lockdown, the river seemed very much contaminated, but now we see that it has changed to completely normal,” member of KSU Sunapyrdi Unit, WD Gympad, said.
The KSU informed that the matter will be taken up with the state government and also with the MSCPB to see that the river, which is the only lifeline of the people residing in the area, remains in the current state.
