GUWAHATI: Assam Police has pledged to be “strict and ruthless” in enforcing the second phase of the lockdown in a bid to stop the spread of COVID-19 in the state.

The commitment comes in the wake of the extension of the nationwide lockdown by the Prime Minister till May 3, 2020 even as there could be ease of certain restrictions in low-risk areas from April 20.

“Friends let us be ruthless in implementing the lockdown till April 20. It’s ruthlessness of the purpose, laced with kindness to the people, for the overall benefit of the mankind. That has been our “mantra” all these weeks,” additional DGP (law and order), G.P. Singh posted on his Twitter handle.

“The lockdown is till May 3rd. However, ruthlessness and strict implementation till April 20th may yield some relaxations further on,” Singh tweeted on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, 1480 persons have been arrested (till Tuesday noon) by Assam Police in regard to lockdown violations since the restrictions were imposed on March 25, 2020 while an amount of Rs 50.59lakh have been realised as fines/penalties from the violators.

Besides, as many as 61 cases have been registered and 36 arrested for spreading fake news on social media/rumours related to COVID-19 so far. Nine of them have been released on bail.
