SHILLONG: The Khasi Student’s Union, Jaintia Hills district unit has demanded from the state government to be stringent with regard to movement of people especially from border areas to ensure that the spread of COVID-19 is contained.
In a statement issued here, the KSU unit were shocked at a report stating that police personnel of Ummulong Beat House apprehended migrant workers on Wednesday night.
The union has demanded from the state government to conduct an investigation into the movement of migrant labourers as to where they come from.
KSU questioned as to whether the government will believe that the migrant workers are from Khliehriat and said, “Who knows they are from Assam or Bangladesh?” The union asserted that people of the state obeyed the lockdown orders but questioned as to how the migrant labourers chose to defy the restriction.
It is of the opinion that there could be a entry and exit of migrant labourers as they were apprehended in Ummulong and Byrnihat.
KSU asked the state government on the steps it will take to tackle the movement of migrant labourers at a time when students and other residents of the state are not able to come back to the state in view of the lockdown.
