SHILLONG: The MLA of Mawlai Constituency, PT Sawkmie, on Monday, lamented that the MLA scheme amounting to Rs 25 lakh is not enough for a constituency as huge as Mawlai which has a population of over 1 lakh.
He told reporters that it is difficult to manage Mawlai but the presence of youth organisations (Seng Samla), women’s organisations (Seng Kynthei), among others, have lighten the burden and the joy of helping others.
He said that there are many organisations, Dorbar Shnong, KSU, FKJGP, HYC, as well as the church, which also extend help.
Sawkmie said that there are around 70 per cent poor families in Mawlai while only 30 per cent possess ration cards.
“Let’s hope that the COVID-19 will not continue because if it does people will die of starvation. Though the government said that there is no problem with food, however, farmers are not getting enough time to work the fields. So in the long run it is difficult, hope God will take a call and the pandemic will fade,” Sawkmie said.
Sawkmie said that the whole country will suffer unless the Prime Minister comes to help with regard to salary, adding that if the lockdown extends it will be difficult.
“Nonetheless, we have to cooperate with the government”, he said.
Meanwhile, the MLA said that the government should also extend assistance to journalists who are also making efforts to gather news.
