Probe into animal hunting begins

SHILLONG: The Forest department and the police have started investigation into the alleged killing of a bear with photographs of the animal being held by poachers in Pynursla going viral on social media on Tuesday.
The pictures of four men holding the bear, which looked exhausted, were doing the rounds on social media.
However, the authenticity of the pictures could not be confirmed till the filing of this report.
The picture captioned in Khasi said a bear was caught by villagers of Mawpyrthuh in Pynursla area under East Khasi Hills district on May 4.
Speaking on the matter, Deputy Chief Minister and Pynursla MLA Prestone Tynsong said there are national and state laws which will take their own course. He also urged people to file complaints.
Principal Chief Conservator of Forests Y Shullai said that a team of the department along with the police has gone to the location for investigation.
Just a few weeks back, another picture of a group of boys carrying a dead barking deer had gone viral. The incident reportedly occurred in the state.
Shullai said that probe into the incident is on and the Forest department has asked the Cyber Crime wing of the police to trace the location of the post and through it, the department is hopeful of tracking the perpetrators.
