SHILLONG: Garo Students’ Union (GSU), Central Executive Committee, Tura, has called for an end to monopoly tax collection in Garo Hills region.
“As this union has noticed that such illegal monopoly tax collection within the districts as reflected amongst the collections should not happen in the common platform in the interest of people in Garo Hills, it should immediately be stopped at this juncture for public interest,” the GSU said in a letter to the Chief Executive Member of GHADC, Tura.
Lamenting the tax collection, especially in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, the GSU has suggested for aid to the needy.
“Be it noted that nationwide lockdown is still going on and in the meantime, some vested-interested persons are collecting monopoly tax from the vendors and suppliers of essential commodities within the districts without any cogent reason. Realising the present position, such illegal collection of monopoly tax has to be stopped for public interest and instead of monopoly tax, essential goods have to be supplied those poor and needy people have to be fed in the nick of distress,” the union said.
