Prominent city resident passes away

SHILLONG: Rahila Khatoon, a prominent resident of the city, passed away on May 5 on account of old-age ailments.
She was laid to rest at the Muslim Burial Ground at Mawprem here on May 6.
Born in 1928 in Bourghat Village of Hailakandi Sub Division of the then Cachar District of Assam, she moved over to Shillong, the capital of Assam during the British regime after getting married in her teens to Kutub Ali Laskar, who was the Registrar of IGP’s Office, Assam.
She lived in Shillong ever since then, until her death.
She was very friendly in her disposition and could relate stories of the British officers and their whims in the pre-Independence days during her conversations with people.
A mother, who brought up her children with utmost care and attention, she was a role model for her contemporaries in the society. Her elder son, Nurul Islam Laskar, is a Public Relations Consultant, while the younger son, Nurul Amin Laskar, is a retired ACS officer.
Of her two daughters, the elder, Rezia Begum, is a retired government officer while the younger, Monowara Bharmal, is a ground executive at Air Canada, Toronto, Canada.
Her grandson, Rezaul Hasan Laskar, is the Foreign Editor, The Hindustan Times, New Delhi.
