NONGSTOIN: The Nongstoin Town Committee (NTC) has failed to implement the Solid Liquid Resource Management (SLRM) project to segregate the biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste, which has led to the temporary closure of the centre in Mawsmai that is under the land of Hima Nongstoin.
The people of Nongstoin have expressed concern over the discontinuation of collection of waste from different households and shops in town.
West Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner, T Lyngwa, while feigning ignorance on the issue, said he was unaware of the reason why the NTC trucks had stopped collecting waste.
He, however, put the onus on the SLRM employee, saying that they had failed to segregate the waste forcing the Hima Nongstoin to temporarily shut the SLRM centre at Mawsmai.
The Secretary of Hima Nongstoin, Apsharailang Syiem, blamed the deputy commissioner for not going through the guidelines.
“It is a matter of grave concern that an officer with great responsibility in the district said that he has not gone through the guidelines. As far as my knowledge is concerned, the Solid Waste Management Rules 2016 has already been enforced by the government,” Syiem said.
