SHILLONG: Social Welfare Minister Kyrmen Shylla said that funds ear marked for construction of toilets, drinking water facility in the state Angandwadi centres are not enough.
Shylla informed that Rs 12,000 has been earmarked for construction of toilets and Rs 10,000 for water connection in each of these centres.
Informing this on Friday, he said the Social Welfare department will approach the state government with a proposal to enhance the earmarked funds.
A proposal letter in this regard will be submitted to Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, Shylla added.
“We understand that the fund which has been earmarked for the purpose is not enough. It is for this reason that we will be submitting a proposal to the chief minister for more funds,” the social welfare minister said after a review meeting with the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment via video conferencing.
Discussions with regard to the status of drinking water and toilet facilities in the Anganwadi centres across the state were carried out during the meeting.
According to Shylla, the government is unable to provide these facilities due to shortage of funds.“I have asked concerned officers to prepare the proposal to be submitted to the chief minister,” the minister said.
The social welfare minister informed that as many as 1,882 Anganwadi centres are currently equipped with water connection while another 4,014 have arranged different ways for availing drinking water.
He said 3,965 such centres have toilet facilities. However, as many as 1,921 centres lack the same.
Shylla said that they had discussed about the one-stop centres in the various districts across the state.
“We have directed the concerned officials to make the various one-stop centres fully functional at the earliest,” he added.
