Nongpoh: The Khasi Students Union, North Khasi Hills District (NKHD) Unit on Monday donated Rs 1 lakh to the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund for COVID-19.
President of the NKHD union, Ferdynald Kharkamni handed over the cheque to the Ri Bhoi Deputy Commissioner, Rosetta Mary Kurbah, at her office chamber.
Speaking to media persons, Kharkamni informed that the union held discussions with the deputy commissioner on restricting inter-state movement of people especially along the Meghalaya-Assam border areas including at Sabuda, Jirang, Umsiang, Khanapara and other villages so as to contain the possible spread of the virus.
The KSU also highlighted the issue of schools collecting fees from students even during this lockdown period which is a great burden to the parents, especially those from poor backgrounds and farmers.
The union urged the concerned schools to waive off at least 50 per cent of the fees for the students coming from poorer background. Kharkamni also informed that the union will soon meet the Education Minister in this regard.The union urged the Ri Bhoi district administration to provide food and water to the stranded citizens entering the district and also to ensure safe return of those who are still stranded in various parts of the country.The KSU also urged the public not to discriminate against the returnees and take necessary precautions by following the government advisories and notifications.
