SHILLONG: Chief Minister Conrad Sangma on Friday informed the House that about 73 per cent of the 448.981 km of the international boundary with Bangladesh has already been fenced while the remaining portion was either in progress or would be taken up after a joint survey.
During question hour in the Assembly, Sangma informed that fencing work along 329.260 km of the border has been achieved and 46.96 km is under progress, while 12.318 km of the stretch has non-feasible gaps and work is yet to start along 60.533-km stretch.
Replying to the supplementary question raised by Mawphlang independent MLA Syntar Klass Sunn, the chief minister informed that there were total number of 11 adverse possessions, out of which, 7 are in India and two in Bangladesh.
He said that some of the adverse possessions are in Jaintia Hills region, while mentioning that a land boundary agreement and working groups were constituted to resolve the issues in this regard.
According to the chief minister, Meghalaya has gained 1.43 km additional land after the problem related to four adverse possessions were resolved.
He also said the governments of India and Bangladesh will again be working to resolve the remaining seven adverse possessions along the international border while adding that some of the pillar locations might have been changed in view of the protocol adopted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Bangladeshi counterpart, Sheikh Hasina.
