Floods hit over 1.90 lakh people in 7 Assam districts

GUWAHATI: A population of nearly 1.95 lakh across seven districts in Assam has been affected by the first wave of the floods, the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) bulletin stated on Tuesday evening.

Goalpara remains the worst-hit district in terms of population with as many as 1,68.196 residents of 140 villages/localities affected and close to 9000 people housed in 28 relief camps under Balijana and Lakhipur revenue circles of the district which shares boundary with Meghalaya.

The other affected districts are Nalbari (10943 people), Dibrugarh (7897), Tinsukia (3455), Lakhimpur (2970),  Darrang (845) and Dhemaji (610).

However, no casualties have so far been reported from any affected district, the bulletin informed.

It may be mentioned that a state highway at Singri connecting Agia to Lakhipur road was washed away on Sunday, inundating several villages under Lakhipur revenue circle. The Ambuk-Salpara PMGY road under Rangjuli revenue circle has been damaged as well.

Rescue operations by the State Disaster Rescue Force and National Disaster Rescue Force are under way.

The Regional Meteorological Centre at Borjhar here in its weather bulletin on Tuesday evening, warned of the possibility of heavy to very heavy showers at few places over Assam and Meghalaya in the next 24 hours.
