NONGSTOIN: Assam Police personnel allegedly chased away their Meghalaya Police counterparts posted at the check point at Salpara in West Khasi Hills district on Tuesday causing panic and fear among villagers of adjoining areas.
According to witnesses, on Tuesday morning, personnel of Assam Police forcibly entered the Salpara area and chased away the Meghalaya Police personnel. Having no other option, the Meghalaya Police team returned to Aradonga outpost, they informed.
The action of the police from Assam created panic among residents of Athiabari, Umsaitwait and other adjoining villages, the FKJGP said adding that they done similar things in the past as well.
FKJGP general secretary Enbok Marak said that it was a disappointment for the district police that the check point, which is meant for checking outsiders, has been captured by the Assam Police. “Local people are scared of coming out to buy essential commodities because of the presence of Assam Police”, Marak added.
The Federation condemned the action of the Assam Police and demanded that the state government take immediate steps to resolve the matter and provide security to the people living in border areas.
