SHILLONG: PHE Minister Samlin Malngiang, on Friday, laid the foundation stones for two water supply schemes in Umiew Pomlakrai and Mawpynthih villages under Nongkrem Constituency. The minister was accompanied by MLA and Chairman of Meghalaya State Planning Board, Lambor Malngiang.
With the aim of achieving the goal of the schemes, Rs 3.73 crore and Rs 10.28 crore have been sanctioned for Umiew Pomlakrai and Mawpynthih water supply schemes, respectively.
The schemes have been funded under the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM), a flagship programme of the Government of India, which aims to connect every rural household with functional household tap connection by 2024.
The PHE minister, in his address, said that the Dorbar Shnong and all stakeholders have to work with cooperation in order to ensure speedy and successful implementation of the scheme in both the villages.
He also informed that apart from the water supply schemes, a road project has also been sanctioned by the World Bank to the tune of Rs 33 crore. “With such development underway, I hope that there will be a positive impact in the lives of the local people,” the minister said.
Meanwhile, pointing out that most of the villages under Nongkrem Constituency have long been neglected and lack basic facilities, Lambor Malngiang said that the schemes will go a long way in helping the people of the region.
The initiative to spearhead the Jal Jeevan Mission in the state was taken by the PHE department right from the inception stage and an action plan for the period 2020-21 up to 2023-24 has been prepared with a view to connect every household with pipe water.
