TURA: Tura MP Agatha Sangma was part of the World Environment Day celebrations at Lower Sangsanggre near Tura on Friday. The programme under the theme ‘Celebrate Biodiversity’ was organized with minimum participation in view of the prevailing Covid situation by College of Community Science, Central Agriculture University in collaboration with the Sangsanggre VEC.
Speaking on the occasion, Agatha highlighted the need to protect the environment and urged the people to take care of the saplings planted as part of the celebration. Informing that the region has very less cases of Covid infections, she advised the people to eat fruits containing vitamin C like orange, lemon, gooseberry etc to boost their immunity. She also urged the people to follow the guidelines issued by the health ministry. While urging the people to plant their own fruits and vegetable, Agatha said that the lockdown had taught a valuable lesson on the need to be self sufficient.
West Garo Hills, Deputy Commissioner, Ram Singh informed that due to the present situation the function has been organised with few participation, but urged everyone to continue to plant trees on their own in their respective localities and villages and to take care of their saplings till it grows to a mature plant and also continue to preserve and protect water retaining species as well as the indigenous plants and trees of the region. Speaking about the ill effects of sodium bicarbonate, Ram Singh advised the people to stop consuming the same.
In South West Garo Hills District, the occasion was observed at several blocks by maintaining the guidelines of social distancing.
Deputy Commissioner, Ch Ramakrishna led the tree plantation in and around the new DC’s office complex at Ampati while at Betasing C&RD Block, World Environment Day “One Member One Tree program for SHGs was organized by Meghalaya State Rural Livelihood Society under the theme “Time for Nature” with the participation of BDO W.R.G.Momin and other block functionaries. The celebration at Zikzak C&RD block was marked by plantation of fruit bearing trees led by BDO M.L.K Marak in collaboration with SHGs.
Bharat Scouts & Guides of the district also participated in the tree plantation on the occasion, while the members of Accommodation Cell of COVID-19 management in the district celebrated the day by planting trees in honour of “Healthcare Heroes” at Ampati Girls’ Secondary School where doctors from the district are being accommodated.
In South Garo Hills, the district police planted saplings at SP Office compound, Police Reserve and in the vicinity of the Baghmara Police Station to mark the occasion. The occasion was observed in the district by the KVK, South Garo Hills at Dagalgopgre village.
East Garo Hills District led by Deputy Commissioner, Swapnil Tembe also planted saplings around the Corona Care Centre set up in the district to mark the occasion.
