Quake hits Japan
Tokyo: An earthquake measuring 6.3 on the Richter scale struck off the coast of the Amamioshima Island in Japan’s Kagoshima prefecture on Sunday, authorities said, adding that no tsunami warning was issued.
The temblor occurred at 12.51 a.m., with its epicentre at a latitude of 28.8 degrees north and a longitude of 128.3 degrees east, and at a depth of 160 km, reports Xinhua news agency. The quake logged 4 in some parts of Kagoshima on the Japanese seismic intensity scale which peaks at 7. There were no immediate reports of injuries or damages. (IANS)
Typhoon Nuri lands in China
Beijing: Typhoon Nuri made landfall in China’s Guangdong province on Sunday morning, the National Meteorological Centre (NMC) said.
Nuri hit Hailing Island in Yangjiang city at around 8.50 a.m., becoming the first typhoon to make a landfall in China this year, Xinhua news agency quoted the NMC as saying.
The NMC has renewed the blue alert for typhoon and the yellow alert for rainstorms.
It forecast strong wind in parts of the South China Sea and Guangdong and rainstorms in Hainan and parts of Guangdong and Guangxi from Sunday to Monday. (IANS)
20 hurt in Lebanon protests
Beirut: At least 20 people were injured in clashes between protesters and the army during anti-government demonstrations in Lebanon, according to a security source.
The source told Xinhua news agency that clashes erupted on Saturday when a group of protesters in the northern city of Tripoli intercepted big trucks carrying food items in an attempt to prevent them from going to Syria.
Protesters were angered to see food being transported to Syria while the people in Lebanon were in great need of these items amid a current economic crisis and the steep hike in prices. (IANS)
Pak presidency budget slashed
Islamabad: The overall budget of Pakistan’s presidency has been cut by more than 60 per cent for 2020-21, according to the budget document.
The total budget of the President House was 992 million PKR for the outgoing fiscal year but President ArifAlvi has reduced it by 597 million, or 60.18 per cent and the reduction has been shown in his personal expenditures along with cuts in allowances of the human resources, Dawn news reported on Saturday.
