SHILLONG: In view of the rise in crimes against women, Congress MLA HM Shangpliang has sounded alarm asserting that those who commit such atrocities often go scot free.
Having met the Director General of Police (DGP), R Chandranathan, on Tuesday, Shangpliang and one more Congress MLA George Lyngdoh took up the issue of crime against women and children.
Shangpliang said, “People get arrested for crimes against women and children but go scot free after being jailed for three months due to the delay in investigation and submitting report”.
He was informed by the DGP that in the past 3 years, over 3,000 rape cases and cases under POCSO have been registererd.
Terming this as alarming, Shangpliang stressed that stringent measures need to be put in place. “Criminals should be kept behind bars,” the MLA said.
Forensic lab
Asked about the condition of the state forensic lab, the MLAs were informed by the DGP that it has been upgraded with machines and the people to man them.
He maintained that charge-sheeting of cases should be supported by evidence and that without substantial evidence, detection is non-viable.
Emphasising on this, Shangpliang said, “Forensic is top-most priority”.
