Minor girl killed in landslide, lady drowned in Itanagar

GUWAHATI: A minor girl was killed after getting buried in a landslide that occurred at Doni Colony in Itanagar in Arunachal Pradesh on Thursday morning while a lady was drowned in Lagun River near Naharlagun on Wednesday evening.

Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu has expressed deep shock and sorrow over the loss of a minor’s life due to landslide.

Incessant rain for the last couple of days has triggered landslides and flood in several parts of the hill state leaving a trail of devastation in the entire hill state.

The minor’s body was retrieved from the debris of the landslide at around 8.15 AM and brought to R K Mission hospital where the doctors declared her to be brought dead, an official source said.

Conveying his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family members, Khandu said that the State and its people were with the victim’s family during these trying times. He announced immediate release of ex-gratia of Rupees four lakhs to the next of kin of the deceased.

Assuring all possible support from the State Government, Khandu directed the district administration and the disaster management department to continuously monitor the situation.

In another incident, a lady was drowned in Lagun River near G extension, Naharlagun on Wednesday evening. Reportedly the lady was returning back from her shop and got drowned while crossing the river. Her body was recovered from Nirjuli this morning.

The CM has expressed deep shock and sorrow over the unfortunate incident and conveyed his deepest condolences to the bereaved family members.

He appealed to the people living in the low-lying areas as well as landslides prone areas to shift to safer place.

Khandu has issued directives to respective Deputy Commissioners and Disaster Management Department to monitor the situation on a regular basis.
