SHILLONG: Despite the adverse comments by the High Court of Meghalaya in 2018 against the police official, Vivek Syiem and his team for falsely accusing a person in a case related to kidnap and murder of a five-year-old boy, the government has effected Syiem’s transfer.
Political interference was alleged in the recent transfer and posting of police officials, including Syiem.
When contacted, an official said that though adverse remarks were made by Home (Police) department against Syiem’s transfer referring to the court order, the government did not pay heed to it.
The court in the order had said, “The manner in which the matter has been handled by the investigating officer and Shri Vivek Syiem, Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime) and other police officers/officials suffice to say that it is quite deplorable. It appears that the learned Trial Court has been swayed by sentiments and in the process has not appreciated the evidence properly”.
According to the court, the mystery could have been unfolded in case the investigating officer including police team without jumping to the conclusion for unwarranted publicity would have reached to the actual criminal that would have been a big solace to the bleeding parents.
The court had then wanted the order to be sent to Director General of Police for information and necessary action.
The court had also taken exception to the statement by Syiem that the accused killed the boy who is his nephew so that he will get a boy child.
Syiem, who had served as SP (City) for several years, was again brought back to the same post.
The transfer was effected when he was holding the post of SP (Anti-Infiltration).
Earlier, after Syiem was not posted elsewhere and remained in Shillong for over 10 years since 2007, the matter was raised in the Assembly with former legislator Paul Lyngdoh describing him as a blue-eyed boy.
