Warning issued as Umiam water rises

SHILLONG: The Chief Engineer, Hydro Planning & Hydro Construction, MePGCL, has issued a warning to people residing or working in the downstream of the Umiam concrete dam to avoid any activity near the river banks.
The warning was issued after incessant rainfall in the last few days raised the water level of the Umiam reservoir to above 3205 ft on Friday morning.
Further, rainfall in the catchment area of the Umiam Dam will necessitate the opening of the gates of the Umiam concrete dam to allow the excess water to pass through, the official informed.
