Assam flood scene grim; death toll rises to 27

GUWAHATI: The flood situation in Assam remained grim with three more deaths reported from two districts and close to 15 lakh people affected across 23 districts, the Assam State Disaster Management Authority informed on Tuesday evening.

Two deaths were reported from Sarupeta revenue circle in Barpeta district while one casualty was reported from Dibrugarh West revenue circle in Dibrugarh district over the past 24 hours, pushing the overall toll in the first wave of floods up to 27.

Barpeta continues to be the worst hit with a massive population of 4,86, 709 affected followed by South Salmara with 195312 people affected and Nalbari where 104272 remain affected.

Currently, 25,461 people are taking shelter in 265 relief camps/centres set up across 21 districts.

The Brahmaputra and its tributaries are currently flowing above danger level.

Rhino dies at Pobitora

Meanwhile, one female rhino was reported to have died due to flood at Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary, the range officer informed on Tuesday. Twelve of the 25 camps set up at the sanctuary remains affected while two had to be shifted.

The deluge continues to submerge large parts of two national parks as well even as 25 animals have so far been rescued since floodwaters submerged low-lying areas of Kaziranga National Park. As many as 143 camps of the 223 opened for sheltering animals remain affected with six of them vacated, the divisional forest officer, Eastern Assam wildlife division informed.

On the other hand, 19 of the 40 camps set up at the Rajiv Gandhi Orang National Park, remain affected by the deluge, the DFO Mangaldai wildlife division, reported on Tuesday.
