SHILLONG: The state government on Thursday announced that the Mawryngkneng Primary Health Centre will be upgraded to a full-fledged Community Health Centre by November bringing relief to the villagers.
Health Minister AL Hek made the announcement on Thursday.
The residents of Mawryngkneng have been demanding upgradation of the PHC for years while local MLA, David Nongrum took up the issue at various levels.
The government finally agreed to upgrade the PHC into a CHC after the health minister inspected it on Thursday.
Meanwhile, Mawryngkneng MLA David Nongrum said that there will be one female and one male ward in the proposed CHC. Nongrum further said that this was a long felt need of the people and once upgraded, it will benefit the rural people to a great extent.
Informing that instruc-tion has been given to the department to start the work by Monday, the MLA said that it will take four months to make the transition. It may be mentioned that Mawryngkneng PHC, in East Khasi Hills, has just one doctor and five nursing staff who have to attend to thousands of people from Mawryngkneng and five other adjoining villages which cause a lot of difficulties for the people and the doctor as well.
