NONGPOH: After a pregnant woman was made to scuttle between various hospitals in the state during an emergency, the Kur Khymdeit Pyllun has slammed the hospitals for reportedly refusing treatment to the woman, who is also a member of the clan from Umden Nongtluh in Ri Bhoi.
The pregnant woman was refused admission in Nongpoh Civil Hospital, H Gordon Roberts Hospital, Nazareth Hospital and both Shillong and Nongpoh branches of Bethany Hospital.
The woman, later, delivered the baby inside a 108 emergency services’ ambulance on the premises of NEIGRIHMS.
The Kur Khymdeit Pyllun said that despite NEIGRIHMS being a designated COVID-19 hospital, the institute did not take the patient in for treatment instead made her wait for hours. It also questioned as to how Bethany Hospital, Shillong, could declare the woman as infected (COVID) if they themselves were unsure of the test result.
“If the so-called Rapid Test Kits are not effective enough, why is the Bethany Hospital, Shillong still using it?” the Kur Khymdeit Pyllun said, while adding that the Bethany Hospital should not have declared the woman as COVID-19 positive unless they were sure as it would have severe consequences upon the physical and mental health of the patient. The hospital (Bethany) kept the woman waiting for hours before shifting her to NEIGRIHMS, it said. “Isn’t it the duty of hospitals to give emergency treatment in such cases or does the patient need to go through the COVID-19 test regardless of her serious health conditions? Isn’t saving lives the primary duty of these hospitals?” the clan said.
It rued that despite the hospitals being fully equipped to treat premature pregnancy and caesarean cases, the woman was refused treatment. “Who would have taken responsibility if something happened to the woman and her baby?” the Kur Khymdeit Pyllun said.
Nevertheless, the woman had given birth to a healthy baby and she herself was alright.
Meanwhile, it asked the state government to build better healthcare infrastructure for people residing in rural areas so that they do not have to encounter such incidents.
