SHILLONG: The state government on Monday made it mandatory for persons to be Meghalaya Teacher Eligibility Test (MTET)-qualified in order to be appointed as elementary school (Class I to VIII) teachers.
“This would apply to schools referred to in clause (n) of Section 2 of the RTE Act, 2009, which include a school established, owned or controlled by the appropriate government or a local authority, referred to in sub-clause (i) of clause (n) of Section 2 of the RTE Act, an aided school receiving aid or grants to meet whole or part of its expenses from the appropriate government or the local authority, referred to in sub-clause (ii) or clause (n) of Section 2 of the RTE Act and an unaided school not receiving any kind of grants to meet its expenses from the appropriate government or the local authority referred to in sub-clause (iv) of clause (n) of Section 2 of the RTE Act,” a statement issued on Monday said.
The MTET has recently seen a lot of developments ranging from the state government introducing new norms to teachers reaching out to the authorities with various demands.
Only last month, the Education department had decided to discontinue the extension of 59 days temporary appointment of assistant teachers in lower primary schools of various districts in the state.
On the other hand, the All Meghalaya Government LP School Contractual Teachers’ Association had urged Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui to retain the jobs of MTET-failed teachers.
