NONGSTOIN: Acting upon the directive of the state government, West Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner, T Lyngwa, on Tuesday said that random testing for COVID-19 across the district is in the offing.
The announcement comes days after the state government ordered the Health department to go for random testing in areas from Byrnihat to Khanapara bordering Assam.
It may be mentioned that Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong had recently said that random testing for COVID-19 across the state would be need-based. The DC told pressmen here on Tuesday that the date to start random testing in the district will be announced soon after necessary preparations with office of the District Medical & Health Officer (DM&HO).
Lyngwa said that people, who are at high risk of contracting the virus such as drivers, shopkeepers, hawkers, hair-stylists, policemen, bank and government employees, will be mandatorily tested while for others, he said that random testing would be voluntary.
He said random testing will be done in every block and market area, and also along border areas like Athiabari.
