Assam flood scene remains grim; toll climbs to 66

GUWAHATI: The flood situation in Assam remained critical on Wednesday with a population of 35.73 lakh affected in 26 districts while seven more deaths were reported from four districts, the Assam State Disaster Management Authority informed.

Three deaths were reported from Morigaon district, two from Barpeta and one each from Sonitpur and Golaghat districts. The overall death toll with the latest casualties has climbed further to 66.

The situation in Dhubri district has worsened in terms of population affected with over 5.51 lakh people displaced from their homes while 5.29 lakh remain affected in Barpeta district.

Likewise,  the situation in Goalpara district too has taken a turn for the worse with the Brahmaputra in spate and about 4.27 lakh affected by the deluge.

Apart from Goalpara, the Brahmaputra is flowing above danger level in Dhubri, Kamrup Metro, Sonitpur and Jorhat districts.

High rainfall activity has also resulted in many of its tributaries rising above danger level in Golaghat, Nagaon, Barpeta and Sonitpur while the Kushiyara river too has swollen in Karimganj district of late.

As many as 36,320 people are currently taking shelter in 629 relief camps/centres across the state.

Meanwhile, large parts of Kaziranga National Park remain submerged with 153 of the 233 camps in the park affected while 14 camps had to be vacated.

“So far, 66 animals of the park have died in the flood while 117 animals have been rescued,” the divisional forest officer, Eastern Assam Wildlife division reported on Wednesday.

The deluge scene is no different in Pabitora Wildlife Sanctuary with 12 camps affected, 12 camps inundated and our camps had to be shifted while 19 out of the 40 camps remain inundated in Rajiv Gandhi Orang National Park.
