GUWAHATI: A population of 24.30 lakh in 2254 villages across 24 districts remains affected by floods in Assam, with one death reported from Sonapur revenue circle under Kamrup (Metro) district, the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) informed on Monday evening.

The overall death toll with the latest casualty has gone up to 85.

Goalpara district remains the worst affected with 4.59 lakh villagers still bearing the brunt of the deluge, followed by Barpeta and Morigaon where 3.37 lakh and 3.34 lakh people respectively are affected.

The situation in Kamrup (Metro) district too has taken a serious turn with over 1.13 lakh people affected by flood.

Meanwhile, the Brahmaputra continues to flow above danger level in five districts. Rivers such as the Dhansiri (S) in Golaghat, Jia Bharali in Sonitpur, Kopili in Nagaon, Beki in Barpeta, and Kushiyara in Karimganj are in spate as well.

As many as 48,197 affected people are currently taking shelter in 468 relief camps/centres across the state.

The flood situation in Kaziranga National Park remains critical despite reports of reduction in the water level at places.

Fifty camps out of the 223 camps in Kaziranga National Park are currently affected by the deluge while the death toll of animals in the park has also climbed to 113.

At the same time, 140 animals have been rescued so far, according to the divisional forest officer, Eastern Assam Wildlife division.

Meanwhile, Assam minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday made an extensive visit to the park to gauge the extent of damage caused by the flood water.

“I have instructed the officials (of the park) to do the best we can. My compliments to the staff for their spirited work,” Sarma posted on his official Twitter handle.

On the other hand, erosion continues unabated in the largest river island of Majuli, with areas such as Moluwal Miri, Bhakat Chapori, Sorai Chapori, Bilotia, etc, the worst affected.
