PDF presses CM on recognition of Khasi language

SHILLONG: The dormant issue of inclusion of Khasi language in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution was stoked on Monday by a delegation of People’s Democratic Front (PDF) when it called on Chief Minister Conrad Sangma to remind him that issue was still pending with the centre.
MLAs and top functionaries of PDF, including Cabinet minister Banteidor Lyngdoh, handed over a memorandum to Sangma saying that the party would also be writing to the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) on the matter.
He said that the party implores upon the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha MPs to take up the issue as well. “We need their voices on this. The time is ripe for the Khasi language to be included in the Eighth Schedule of the Indian Constitution”, he said.
The party members also apprised the CM on the electricity bills that have skyrocketed in the recent months asserting that there is no proper management and it increases the financial burden on the poor.
Lyngdoh said that electricity bills that were usually Rs 200-Rs 300 have soared to Rs 1000-Rs 2000.
In this connection, the Chief Minister asked the MLAs to bring evidence of the hiked electricity bills and action will be taken accordingly.
MLA Umsning Jason Sawkmie Mawlong said that the CM will call the concerned department for a meeting to discuss the contentious issue.
