GUWAHATI: Current wave of flood has taken a heavy toll in famed Kaziranga National Park where 120 animals have perished so far due to flood.
Ninety per cent of areas in Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve (KNPTR) has remained submerged till date posing great threat to park’s fauna resources.
There are 12 rhinos and 91 hog deer among the animals killed in the famous rhino abode on the bank of the Brahmaputra. Nine rhinos have died due to drowning while three suffered natural deaths. Of the 91 hog deer killed 42 died due to drowning, 16 due to vehicle-hit, 16 in CWRC and 17 die to other reasons.
So far 147 flood-hit animals have been rescued by forest personnel and staff of the CWRC at Borjuri (Bokakhat) and Bishwanath Chariali.
Out of 223 forest camps inside the national park and the UNESCO World Heritage Site, 126 have been inundated and five vacated so far.
Meanwhile, in view of a large number of flood-hit animals crossing over to Karbi Anglong hills by crossing the National Highway from the deluged national park, joint patrolling has been organised on Karbi Anglong side by forest personnel from Kaziranga National Park and Karbi Anglong areas.
