NONGSTOIN: As the cases of COVID-19 and the reports of blatant violation of government directives continue to rise, the volunteers of Village Defence Party (VDP) of New Nongstoin on Wednesday decided to roll up their sleeves and carried out random checking, slapping penalties of Rs 100 on people refusing to wear masks.
The violators were not only fined but were also given away masks along with a warning of increase in fine if they violate the directives anew.
“Though West Khasi Hills has no positive case so far, but we cannot take it lightly because if there is a positive case in Nongstoin, it will be out of control”, one of the volunteers said.
It may be mentioned that reports of violations of social distancing norms in Upper New Nongstoin and New-Nongstoin have cropped up earlier.
A resident of Nongstoin, Albert Marwein, has suggested that opening of all shops without proper strategies is dicey because people are not adhering to social distancing norms.
Since both the villages are in the heart of Nongstoin, he suggested the Nongstoin Market COVID-19 Management Committee to ensure that shops start opening and vehicles start plying on odd-even basis.
