SHILLONG: Police is yet to make a breakthrough in solving the mystery over recovery of limbs of a woman from Umiam lake recently. Handicapped because there is no missing report and the decomposed body parts do not provide much clue, police has only a piece of earring that the victim was wearing to rely on.
During investigation, police stumbled upon a possible link when a family residing at Last Stop Laban, identified the golden coloured earring. They told police that ear piece matches with that of another person (identity not disclosed) who went missing from Last Stop since July 10.
But there is no conclusive evidence so far about whether the body parts were that of the missing person, or it is a murder case or suicide. Besides, the family has not claimed the body parts for want of more corroborating evidence.
Police is now awaiting forensic report which might provide clinching details of the missing links.
It may be recalled that the highly-decomposed female body was found afloat at Umiam river on July 13 and one gold-coloured earring was found from the right ear of the corpse
Police have registered an un-natural death case and if they find any foul play, they would change into a regular murder case.
When contacted, East Khasi Hills SP Sylvester Nongtyngnger also said that they are awaiting the postmortem report before reaching any conclusion about the nature of the incident since body floated in the lake in three parts. After the police recovered upper part of the body, one leg was retrieved from Umiam on Saturday and another leg came afloat on Wednesday.
