SHILLONG: The National Students’ Union of India (NSUI), Meghalaya State unit, has condemned the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) national president S Shanmugam and demanded his resignation after a case of harassment was registered against him.
“The police booked him under IPC sections 271 and 427 and under the Tamil Nadu Women Harassment (Prevention) Act. However, he has not been arrested. The 60-year-old students’ union president was seen urinating outside a woman’s house who is his neighbour to vent out his anger over a petty situation,” NSUI president Bansharailang Pyngrope said in a statement issued on Tuesday.
“Despite this condemnable act, the leadership has not taken any action against Dr. Shanmugam, which shows the lack of respect and dignity towards women from the organisation as a whole. I stand in solidarity with all my colleagues across the country in demanding immediate resignation of the ABVP’s national president,” he added.
The Chennai Police on Saturday booked Shanmugam on the charge of harassing the old lady by urinating outside her apartment and in other ways.
The lady had also alleged that Shanmugam had also harassed her over phone, and threw garbage and used face masks outside her apartment.
The police registered the case against Shanmugam after DMK MP Kanimozhi came out in support of the old lady.
According to the woman, the family had two parking slots in the apartment they lived in and Shanmugam had requested his aunt whether he could park his vehicle in one slot.
She said his aunt agreed but said that Shanmugam will have to pay a monthly rent of Rs 1,500, following which the trouble started for her. (With Inputs From IANS)
