NONGSTOIN: Days after a large number of bikers from Assam entered the state defying the ban on interstate travel, some bikers from the neighbouring state on Sunday, again arrived at Mawsikar via Umwali, claiming that there have been no violations of protocols as Mawsikar falls under Assam.
The Superintendent of Police, West Khasi Hills, HG Lyngdoh, had recently urged the SP of Kamrup not to allow any outsiders to enter Langpih or any part of West Khasi Hills amidst the current crisis.
Chief Minister Conrad Sangma had also taken up the matter with his Assam counterpart recently after the protocol violations.
But all the measures seem to have yielded no results.
West Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner, T Lyngwa, confirmed that the bikers, who entered the state on Sunday, came through Umwali and stopped after they reached Mawsikar.
Expressing concern over the rise in COVID-19 cases, Lyngwa said people from Assam are still entering the state without any restrictions from Assam.
“We have sent our police personnel to Mawsikar to observe the situation where we have no authority to do anything because it is up to the higher authority to decide on the matter,” Lyngwa added.
In the earlier incident, when more than 100 bikers and people in vehicles from Assam came to Umwali and Langpih, residents had wondered as to how the Assam Police allowed the people to enter Langpih despite entry point in the border being closed since July 24. Various FKJGP units had also expressed concern over the incident.
