SHILLONG: The death of 15 pigs in Lamin village under Amlarem Civil Sub-Division has remained an oblivious chapter with the government not finding a conclusion to it even as most put onus on the infamous African Swine Fever (ASF), which killed a significant number of the creatures in Assam.
In this regard, Deputy Chief Minister, Prestone Tynsong, on Monday informed that the state government had a detailed discussion on the report received from the veterinary officer relating to the infection of the pigs in the village. “We cannot say whether these pigs are infected with African swine fever or not but, however, to make sure that the disease does not spread to nearby villages, necessary measures to prevent this spread are already in place,” Tynsong said.
Soon after the information was received about the death of the pigs, veterinary officers collected the samples of six pigs, which were then sent to North East Regional Disease Diagnostic Laboratory, Khanapara.
He said that the report of the findings would be sent to Union government and, if accepted, a notification would be sent to the state government. The disinfecting of pig sheds has taken place while meetings with Rangbah Shnong to highlight the threat of the disease to them have also been held. The government has also advised people staying in nearby villages not to slaughter pigs or consume pork till the time state government gets confirmation from the Centre.
