SHILLONG: The Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) central body has said that submission of Aadhaar cards should not be made mandatory in availing the benefits from the various schemes of the central and state government.
In a statement issued here, the HYC president, Robert Kharjahrin, said that the council is concerned over many of the poor residents being deprived of the government benefits as they do not possess Aadhaar card.
While stating that most schemes of the Centre require Aadhaar card, he said that majority of the people of the state have not been enrolled for Aadhaar.
In this regard, the HYC has urged the state government to take up the matter with the Centre on not making Aadhaar cards mandatory, Kharjahrin said, adding that helping the poor is more important than having an Aadhaar card.
Previously, the HYC had also written to the state government on the schemes for the marginalised section of the society.
