NEW DELHI: Aiming to rid escalating costs arising due to rerouting of imported goods to the North East, MP, Vincent Pala, on Friday urged the Centre to strengthen Dawki-Tamabil Land Customs International Port in the state, which is one of the oldest ports in the country.
In the letter to Union Minister of State for Finance and Corporate Affairs, Pala pointed out that edible oil is being imported by a Jharkhand party and subsequently rerouted to the Northeastern states, including Meghalaya.
This has resulted in escalation of various costs like transport, loading and unloading, thereby causing the prices of the goods to inflate, which could have been avoided if the Dawki port was used, he said.
Import of edible oil is restricted from this port due to restrictions imposed vide some clauses in the import schedule, the MP said.
Similarly, export of onion has been currently stopped, for which permission needs to be granted to evolve a balance in trade, the letter stated.
Moreover, Pala said that a Customs Warehouse with modern facilities like preservation, loading and unloading should be immediately set up in Dawki.
This would facilitate stocking of goods that arrive from Bangladesh.
