SHILLONG: The central body of the Federation of Khasi Jaintia & Garo People (FKJGP) renewed their opposition to rail project in the state, saying that the government should not confuse the people in the name of development but to focus on arresting the spread of the virus.
The organisation made the statement in the wake of a renewed call to construct railway line in Ri Bhoi district. The KHADC has declined to issue No Objection Certificate (NOC) to the state Transport department for the construction of the railway line.
In a statement issued here, the organisation said it disagreed with Chief Minister Conrad Sangma’s stance on introduction of railways in Khasi Hills.
It may be mentioned that Sangma had pointed out the inconvenience faced by the people of the state during the prevailing pandemic due to the absence of railway station in Khasi Hills region.
Asserting that such a statement was unacceptable as talks of introducing railways are not significant in the present time, the organisation reiterated its demand to implement the mechanism to prevent influx into the state.
The organisation said that instead of envisioning for railways, it should expedite the implementation of entry and exit points.
The organisation further exhorted the government to seriously follow up on the Inner Line Permit resolution.
