NONGSTOIN: Legislators — Macmillan Byrsat and Gigur Myrthong — have urged Chief Minister Conrad Sangma to make operational the office of the District Mining Officer at Nongstoin, which is non-functional till date.
In a joint statement on Wednesday, Nongstoin MLA Byrsat and Mawshynrut MLA Myrthong said that the office remains non-functional despite different number of posts being sanctioned which include one LDA and two Grade IV employees besides the District Mining Officer, which was included in the last budget provision.
However, it is learnt that the officer and staff are functioning from the office of the Director of Mineral Resources, Shillong, as a result of the non-functionality of the Nongstoin office.
Stating that West Khasi Hills is rich in mineral resources and has contributed a lot to the state’s economy, the two legislators said that due to the Nongstoin office remaining non-functional, miners across the district have been facing hardships as they have to travel to Shillong for obtaining documents like challans etc, for running their business.
