SHILLONG: The Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC), Shillong City, has demanded of the state government to set up monuments in memory of famous personalities of the Hynniewtrep community at the PWD Office site in Barik and to turn the venue into a public meeting ground rather than establishing a shopping mall.
In a statement issued here, the HYC said that Shillong is congested and constructing shopping malls will lead to further deterioration of the present condition coupled with traffic snarls.
The organisation also pointed out that the city has no place to hold agitations or public meetings as such activities often cause inconveniences to people when held in areas like Khyndai Lad and Motphran.
It may be mentioned that the Meghalaya Government is contemplating to establish a multi-storied malll at the iconic PWD complex at Barik point here.
