TURA: East Garo Hills on Wednesday recorded the highest spike in Covid-19 cases since the virus first made its appearance in the district with 22 persons from the Rongjeng Market containment area testing positive during random antigen testing.

The total number of active cases in the area now stands at 30, while the overall total for the district is 33. Out of the total of 4 returnees to Williamnagar who tested positive, 1 has since recovered.

According to East Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner, Swapnil Tembe more than 260 people from the area were tested on Wednesday. The positive patients have since been isolated and are being kept at the Additional Corona Care centre set up at Rongjeng, he added.

Tembe also informed that contact tracing of the positive patients would continue for the next two days and urged the people to cooperate and follow Covid-19 protocols.

Meanwhile, in West Garo Hills District, Phulbari Market was once again declared a containment zone after three fresh cases were detected also during random antigen testing.

“Our IDSP health workers are conducting house to house survey and detection. We will be collecting samples from the entire market on Thursday,” West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner, Ram Singh said.
