SHILLONG: The Meghalaya Legislative Assembly Committee on Women Empowerment has decided to roll up its sleeves and initiate probe into the increasing rape cases in Garo Hills.
The statement from the committee comes in the aftermath of a rape incident of a minor in Phulbari.
“Incidents of rape are increasing to a large degree in the Garo Hills region and we are going to enquire as to what are the causes,” Committee chairperson, Ampareen Lyngdoh, said on Monday.
Giving an insight on the road ahead to address the issue, Lyngdoh said the Committee will try to talk West Garo Hills Superintendent of Police into getting engaged in long-term plans to generate awareness about the increase in such heinous crimes.
Talking about the most recent case of a 16-year-old, who was gang-raped on August 20 in Phulbari, Lyngdoh said, “Occurrence of these types of incidents around the community makes us wonder what is going wrong.”
Reiterating that the committee has summoned the Director General of Police and the WGH SP to report before the committee on September 15 with regard to the incident, Lyngdoh said, “We hope that by then, we will at least have some idea as to what had happened”.
