SHILLONG: The elusive solution to the festering problem of hawkers and vendors, who tend to occupy public thoroughfares, appears to have made a small progress.
After years of fruitless exercise by government officials, following a High Court directive, the authorities have identified a few sites for accommodation of the street hawkers and road side vendors on a temporary basis.
Deputy Chief Minister, Prestone Tynsong on Monday told reporters that only those who were registered vendors and hawkers would be relocated to these sites.
At a review meeting on the day, the Urban Affairs department made a detailed presentation in this regard. Later Tynsong said, “Temporarily we have identified a few places including the Polo parking lot which would be converted into vending zones”.
He made it clear the identified places will accommodate registered vendors or hawker who have registered with authorities through vending Committee headed by the CEO of Shillong Municipal Board or through vending committee headed by the Deputy Commissioner.
It is learnt that the government has identified not less than 5- 6 places and the Deputy Commissioner will notify the places after which hawkers can start their business activities.
Around 300 vendors have registered in both the committees.
