SHILLONG: Sohryngkham, which, at one point of time, was the biggest village in Asia, is still in want of a primary health centre (PHC). However, with David Nongrum, Local MLA, appealing to the government on Wednesday to take necessary action in constructing the much-needed PHC in the village, there may yet be hope.
The MLA apprised Health Minister, AL Hek, of the village’s need for a PHC at the earliest.
Speaking to newsmen after meeting the Hek, Mawryngkneng MLA David Nongrum said that the village, which now had more than 30,000 people, only has a small health centre with three nurses and no doctors.
In addition, the health centre is also catering to two nearby villages.
During the meeting, the health minister admitted that it would be a herculean task to upgrade the health centre into a PHC, but assured that he would submit a proposal to the government and a detailed project report (DPR) would be made in this regard.
“I have also requested the government to upgrade the health infrastructure in the rural areas as it will ease rural influx into the city for medical needs,” Nongrum said.
Moreover, the MLA also asked the minister to hand over one ambulance from Mawryngkneng PHC to Diengpasoh PHC.
During the meeting, the MLA and minister underlined the need to upscale the health infrastructure in rural areas of the state.
