SHILLONG: As the Assam-Meghalaya border issue continues to remain the talk of the town, especially at a time when there are allegations of blatant violations of interstate movement against the neighbouring state, the Garo Students’ Union (GSU) has now come forward, alleging police misconduct from the neighbouring state in the bordering areas.
Claiming that a man was assaulted by the Assam Police on Tuesday evening, the GSU, Khasi Hills Unit, has sought necessary action from Chief Minister Conrad Sangma against them.
“The Assam Police brutality in West Khasi Hills is disgraceful as on September 1 around 4:45 pm, when Shri A Sangma was out of his home to fetch essential commodities, Assam Police illegally detained and assaulted him while he was on his way home,” the GSU said.
Lamenting that this is not the first time the locals became a witness to such high-handedness by the Assam Police, the Union alleged that assaults on the residents of Athiabari and Malangkona region have been meted out for a long time.
Stating that the Assam Police had earlier illegally intruded in the state territory and destroyed two culvert constructions sanctioned by the state government, the GSU said it had held talks with the then-Home Minister, James Sangma, for solution, only to fall on deaf ears.
“We don’t know how many innocent lives have to suffer this kind of violence, which is clearly the violation of the civil rights using excessive force,” the GSU rued.
