NONGPOH: The teachers under the banner of Meghalaya Teachers Eligibility Test (MTET)-qualified teachers, Meghalaya, have exhorted the state government to remove the contractual teachers who, despite not being fully qualified, have passed the MTET.
The teachers, while talking to media persons on Tuesday, have also demanded of the government to expedite the process of recruiting qualified teachers at the earliest in various government and government-aided schools in the state.
Claiming that other states including Assam had recently appointed more than 5,000 fully-qualified teachers, spokesperson of the MTET-Qualified Teachers, Meghalaya, Sylvester Mawthoh, questioned the government for not following in their footsteps, especially for the betterment of the students.
“Teachers should be an icon and a role model for the students and this is possible only if qualified teachers are appointed. The government should take serious note of this as education is the only tool which shapes and moulds a person to become successful in life,” Mawthoh said, adding that the delay in recruiting MTET-qualified teachers has put both the future of the students and the teachers at jeopardy.
With regard to allegations that said MTET is just a piece of paper and cannot decide the future of teachers, Mawthoh said, “We are living in an age where a piece of paper is very important to decide one’s future”.
Mawthoh added that every profession requires certain criteria and qualifications.
Meanwhile, the MTET-Qualified Teachers spokesperson has also called for support from parents, NGOs and elected representatives in this regard.
