SHILLONG: The KHADC has constituted the Khasi Hills Building and Structure Regulatory Authority to issue building permissions in areas within the council’s jurisdiction.
Announcing the constitution of the regulatory body, KHADC Chief Executive Member, Titosstarwell Chyne said, “The Authority will issue building permissions in areas falling within the jurisdiction of the KHADC. The state government has already notified the MUDA building bye-laws to be implemented only in areas falling under MUDA. For construction of buildings in areas outside MUDA which means areas falling under the District Council necessary permission may be obtained from the new regulatory body”.
Executive Member in charge of Building, Paul Lyngdoh said that the Authority has been constituted under provisions of the Town and Country Planning Act, 1973 which authorises District Councils to issue building permission
under its own regulatory authority and its own bye-laws.
“This effectively means that we will no longer implement the MUDA building bye-laws of MUDA but to frame, adopt our own bye-laws. To start this process, we have decided to constitute the Khasi Hills Building and Structure Regulatory Authority. It will be technically very strong and will have structural engineering experts, architects and people who deal with building safety norms etc”, Lyngdoh said.
The rate for obtaining building permission would be kept nominal to avoid burdening applicants, he added.
